Introducing the Research Centre for the History of Food and Drink

In 1997 the Department of History at The University of Adelaide supported the establishment of the Research Centre for the History of Food and Drink, under the directorship of Professor Lynn Martin. In 2004, Dr Roger Haden became the Centre's new director, and Lynn remains editor of the Centre's Newsletters

The primary purpose of the Research Centre has been:

  • The promotion of research in the history of food and drink in Australasian and global contexts.
  • The study of the production and consumption of food and drink, of their relationship to national and international politics, society, and economy, environment and health.
  • To explore the cultural meaning and significance of food and drink.
  • To support scholarhsip in the above areas of research.

To achieve these purposes the Research Centre's activities include:

  • Seminars and Conferences attended by local, national, and international scholars. Speakers have included Don Dunstan, Anne Ruston, Alan Warde, Sydney Mintz, Marion Halligan, Doreen Fernandez, Eva Gullberg, Richard Hosking, Barbara Santich, Don Levy, James Walvin, Valmai Hankel, Michael Symons, Ken Albala, and A. Lynn Martin.
  • Our Newsletter which highlights the activities of the Research Centre and its members, and includes essays and reviews on the history of food and drink, current conferences and events.
  • Seeking members with a research focus on the history of food and drink and also students and scholars with an interest in Gastronomy and Food Studies.
  • Providing links to academic groups involved in food and drink scholarship.
