Symposia of Australian Gastronomy Archivem
The Research Centre for the History of Food and Drink is pleased to announce the development of an archive to document the history and contribution to food culture of the Symposium of Australian Gastronomy, which since it was first held, in 1984, has been actively involved in the promotion of Australian gastronomy; that is, one relevant to the culture, climate, and history of the Australian continent. The symposia have traditionally been organized around a topical theme, and that tradition continues. The theme of most recent, 2007 Symposium, for example, held at Dover, Tasmania, was "Beyond the Supermarket: Overcoming Gastronomic Poverty."
A strong allegiance to the cause of Australain gastronomic culture has resulted from these events, and a dedicated core of enthusiasts, whether professionally involved in the food industry, or simply keen amateur cooks, gardeners, or "foodies," show great loyalty by their continued symposia attendance, on a bi-annual basis, at different locations around the country (including one held in New Zealand, in 2001). Around 70 people usually attend, enjoying three days of discussion, talks, and presentations, excursions, various creative interpretations of "the meal," and a finale-style banquet. Inventiveness, innovation, and consequently excitement, creates enthusiasm and facilitates involvement. More than any conference, the Symposia of Australian Gastronomy embrace participatory gastronomy in a way that nourishes the intellectual component of these events.
Fifteen symposia, over 23 years...
The site will include scanned copies of all the Proceedings (papers/essays delivered at the symposia), plus photographs, memorabilia and comment from those who have attended over the years. Each symposium will have its own dedicated webpage and visitors to the site will have easy access to the year they wish to view.
