School of History & Politics

Welcome to the School of History and Politics. The School is one of five schools in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Adelaide. The movement from Departments to Schools came as part of a restructure in mid 2000. In bringing together the old Departments of History and Politics, the new School reflects an earlier administrative arrangement, as History and Politics existed as a single Department until 1954.

The range and the scope of teaching and research in the School have grown in recent years and now cover most of the key areas in each discipline. History has undergraduate courses that span Australian, British, Asian, European and American history. Politics concentrates its courses into the fields of International Studies, Comparative Politics, Political Theory and Australian Politics. There are also postgraduate programs in Art History, Gastronomy and International Studies.

Our academic staff are nationally and internationally renowned for their research, and the School is closely linked with two unique research centres, the Centre for British Studies and the Research Centre for the History of Food and Drink. There are also vigorous weekly research seminars in both disciplines and a large body of visiting researchers and research students. Together they constitute one of the University’s most active research communities.

We take pride in our reputation for friendliness and informality, as well as excellence in teaching and research. If you would like to learn more, please call in to our School office on the fourth floor of the Napier Building, or simply explore the links on the left.

Information about enrolment, including courses available in 2008, is available from the Faculty website.
